Got questions? We’ve got answers.

What is the Sun Up Challenge?

The Sun Up Challenge is a fundraising event for Redkite. It has been organised to raise money to support families facing childhood cancer, helping to offer financial, emotional and practical support to all those affected by a cancer diagnosis.

The Sun Up Challenge takes place every day throughout September 2021. Participants show their support by running, walking, rolling or otherwise moving at sun up, sunset or a time that suits you, each day either as individuals or in teams.

Who can take part?

Everyone! It’s a challenge you can do wherever you may be.

Whether you’re an individual, workplace, team or bunch of buddies keen to show you care – you can take part in The Sun Up Challenge. When you sign up, we’ll help you kick off your fundraising and start planning.

As we get close to 1 September, you’ll receive more tips and support to help raise awareness and funds for families facing childhood cancer.

Together, we’ll help families cover utility and other essential household bills, receive mental and emotional support from Redkite counsellors, and connect to other families who know what having a child with cancer is like, and offer help wherever and whenever it’s needed.

How much does it cost to register?

Zero, zilch nada! It’s free to sign up.

How does it work?

Once you sign up, you’ll receive a link to a personalised fundraising page and resources. You can choose to move at your own pace each day and spread the word to share the excitement. Fundraising is open from the time you join – so you can get up, get out and get to supporting families right away.

From the moment you sign up, we’ll be there with tips and tailored support to help you.

Where and when is the Sun Up Challenge?

The challenge takes place every morning throughout the month of September. Of course, you can run, walk, or roll any time of the day that suits you, and anywhere that works for you.

Does the Sun Up Challenge need to comply with COVID-19 restrictions?

Yes. If you’re joining as a team, please make sure to adhere to social distancing rules, and any rules or restrictions around public and social gatherings in your local area, state or territory.

You can find links to the latest information on the Australian Government Department of Health website.

What do I have to do?

We’re keeping it simple – all you need to do is run, walk or roll each morning at sun up throughout September, and ask your friends and family to sponsor you. Their support will help raise funds for Redkite’s essential work offering practical support to families facing childhood cancer.

Where do the funds that I raise go?

The funds you raise will go to Redkite, and will be used to expand support services for children and their families impacted by childhood cancer.

Is there a minimum amount I have to raise?

There’s no minimum amount, because every dollar counts! There’s no limit on the amount you can raise either, we’d love to have you raise as much as you can.

No matter how great or small, your support will have a lasting impact and be in the hearts of every family you help.

If you’re wanting help on how to boost your fundraising, please give us a call on 1800 REDKITE (1800 733 548) or email us at community@redkite.org.au.

How do I run with Sophie?

You can join Sophie and her family for the Sun Up Challenge by joining their team!

Please note, if you have already joined your own team or workplace, you can’t join another team. No matter what, by taking part in the Sun Up Challenge, you’ll be supporting families like Sophie’s!

How do I update my fundraising goal?

Simply log into your account, and head to your dashboard. From there, click on ‘edit my page’ and update your fundraising goal.

How do I bank any offline fundraising money I raise?

The best way to bank your offline fundraising money is through your online fundraising page with your credit card.

Deposit the money into your bank account and then make the transaction directly onto your page using your credit card.

You can even make multiple transactions and add each donor's name and their individual messages to you.

Login to your fundraising page and to the My Donations page in your dashboard. Your total fundraising amount will then be shown on your page.

What resources are available to help me raise funds?

Your fundraising page makes it easy for you to get donations and spread the word about your Sun Up Challenge.

We’ve also created some resources to help you raise money. You can download all of these resources from your fundraising page’s dashboard.

Can I post my photos or details to Redkite’s social media?

Sure can! We’d absolutely love to see what you’re up to at sun up. Post your photos in a public post on your account and use #SunUpChallenge or #RedkiteCharity. You can also tag us directly by mentioning @redkitecharity.

Don’t forget that sharing your challenge on socials will show your supporters you’re committed to the challenge, they may even want to join you!

I’ve shared my page on Facebook asking for donations using the Facebook Donate button. Will the money I raise come to Redkite?

Technically, yes. However, we recommend you don’t use the Facebook Donate button to raise money for The Sun Up Challenge, as we can’t link any donations back to your fundraising page!

If you’ve already set up a post, we suggest that you:

  1. Delete the post, as this is the only way to remove the Facebook Donate button; and
  2. Create a new Facebook post and share the link to your fundraising page without adding the ‘Donate’ button.

Why aren’t donations I’m receiving through Facebook showing up on my fundraising page?

Facebook donations are handled, processed, and held by a third party. It means that we can’t link them to your Sun Up Challenge fundraising page. Given these limitations, we recommend you don’t use the Facebook Donate button to fundraise.

If you’d like your Facebook friends to support your challenge, the best way to do it is share a link to your fundraising page on social media instead.

How do I create a team or workplace?

It’s simple! When you sign up, just tick ‘Create a Team.’ Alternatively, you can go to your fundraising dashboard, go to Create a team, and follow the instructions.

How do I log my distance online with Strava, Fitbit or MapMyFitness?

Your profile page includes your personal distance tally so you can track your distance towards your target. This is a great way to keep your friends updated on your workouts!

Please note, on 1 September everyone’s distance tracking will return to 0km as this is the official start date of the challenge.

If you track your workouts with Fitbit, Strava or MapMyFitness your distances will automatically add to your tally. If you do not use one of these apps you can also log your fitness activities manually.

Follow these steps to track your KMs automatically:

  1. Download the Fitbit, Strava or MapMyFitness app and set up your account
  2. Log in to your account on The Sun Up Challenge and in your Dashboard go to the My Fitness Activity page.
  3. Under the heading ‘Connect your preferred Fitness app’, click your chosen app.
  4. Follow the prompts to connect your account
  5. When you next work out, select ‘start your workout’ in the app on your phone. Once you end your workout, save your workout and your distance will be published to the tally on your page the following day.

If you have synced your app already but it is not working, please log in and re-connect it.

When using Fitbit, you must ‘start’ an activity and save it. Your daily steps will not automatically add to your page. If you are having issues, try syncing through BOTH your Fitbit and the Fitbit app on your smartphone.

Your tally will be updated each day with the previous day’s distances.
